Atticus is ambitious in the he encourages others to view coloured folk as equals, not as underlings. He leads by example in the way he defends the innocent "tom " against the rape charges bought by the white trash. He encourages Jim and scout to view Boo Radley as an equal, not some abnormal creature as most of the community do.
