Are equity actors allowed to perform in self-produced works?

I am currently living in Maryland and auditioned for an equity show in Pennsylvania and received a call back. If I get the part, I know I will have to apply for my equity card. I have been reading a lot about the rules and regulations of equity membership, and I know that once I receive my equity card, I am no longer allowed to perform in non-union shows without special permission. My issue is that there is nothing in the rules that state anything about actors who want to perform in their own self-produced work. I am also a playwright, currently working on my one man show. I am also in the process of starting my own theatre company, and I will probably be looking to premiere my one man show as part of my theater's season or as a solo work outside of the season. Would this be feasible if I were an equity member?
