How do I change the starter motor on my 1980 XS1100 motorcycle?

The start button had fallen off and I've just been depressing the spring with a skinny object to make the connection, however while driving home the connection was made during operation and I believe it burned up my starter motor. I am new to motorcycles but a huge DIYer. I would like to know if its feasible for me to replace the motor, how to do it, and any other insight on the project.
